What must you know in case of a car accident?
Motorists facing the consequences of a car accident should be informed and prepared of what to do before they have an accident. Luckily, a car accident does not happen every day, so it will mostly be an unexpected event.

RAMLA (Road accident management and Legal Action), is a specialist in material car accident management.

www.RAMLA.co.za, an organisation specialising in managing material car accident claims, recommends following the 10 steps when you are involved in an accident:
1. Be prepared to act patiently, carefully and calmly in the moments just after the accident happens and help others before check on damages.
2. Call the traffic police on telephone number 10111, or contact the local police station directly.
3. Have a form at hand which will enable you to note all the relevant data. Accident forms are freely available as a PDF/file at www.RAMLA.co.za)
4. Fill in the form as well as you can and make sure that information given to you is verified, i.e. drivers details, residential address, insurance details, witness, car data, etc.
5. Take photographs of the accident, the damage and the surrounding area. Focus on traffic signs and other relevant features, which may support the proof of your claim. Try to take pictures before removing the cars.
6. Make a note of the police officer's contact details and the police station he/she works at.
7. Try to motivate the participants to note the circumstances of the accident in the police report, and insist that at least all the drivers involved in the accident sign it. Make sure that you are satisfied that the report states the events as you see them.
8. Note initial reference number of the police report and make sure that you get a copy. You will probably have to approach the police station later, as you may not receive a copy of the Accident Report (AR) or the AR number immediately. It is an important document for a later claim.
9. Get sufficient qualified damage assessment by quotations from panel beaters or repair workshops. More complicated or heavy damage may require a car damage assessment done by an experienced, professional and registered assessor. Be aware that an assessor sent by the liable party to check your damage is often contracted by the insurance companies. You may expect them to work in favour of the company.
10. File your claim, or if you are unable to do so, find someone who will do that for you carefully. You can use either a lawyer or specialised road accident manager, such as RAMLA.
If you follow the 10 points of initial accident procedure carefully, you may have done a good job to enable your legal representatives to claim successfully for your compensation.
